You have 2 days left to be exposed

Although in theory this is a personal blog, life and work merge together when one works at a small non-profit. I want to remind folks that you have until TOMORROW, Saturday, February 7th to get your submission in the mail (or dropped off at the PRC 12-5pm) for the 14th Annual PRC Juried Exhibition, EXPOSURE.

Seriously photo folks, don't let this one pass you by! It takes but a second to burn 10 images to a cd and gather your materials! If you join online and don't have a card, don't worry, just make a note of it, we check everyone. Run, don't walk to the post office. (Not that I am encouraging procrastination, but you can find the branch that is open til the wee hours online for that coveted postmark).

The juror this year is Russel Hart, Executive Editor at American Photo magazine and Editor of American Photo On Campus. This year, he will be on the jury of AP's "Emerging Artist" and "Student Portfolio" showcases.

Not only that, but all of us jurors are a part of a secret society (just kidding), but understand that we do talk to each other and recommend artists to each other. Who knows what this might lead to? Not only that, but gathering up a handful of juried show wins at places like the PRC and its other kindred spirits speaks volumes on your resume. A good investment, to be sure.

Read about the submission details and get the required entry form as a PDF here. See pics of last year's show here. Now, git!

Help me raise $ for the PRC!

Greetings ~

I have set up this fundraising page in order to raise money for my favorite 32-year-old non-profit and the organization to which I have devoted the last 7 years, the Photographic Resource Center. I am sent this to artists and people I have worked with and admired, but of course such folks are also online too.

As many of you know, I am entirely committed to the PRC as well as the artists, many of them emerging, that I exhibit or view well beyond the time that I show or see them. The PRC is an amazing institution and humbled to be a part of its fabric and history. Hopefully we have made a difference in your life too!

(PS...We're having a little friendly competition at the PRC to see who gave raise the most on their page, so I'd love your help - it's fun too!)

Your tax-deductible donation will be used in support of the PRC's Annual Appeal, which helps to raise much needed funds for all of our award-winning exhibitions, education, and member programs. Obama's campaign had it right: small amounts from many committed people instead of large amounts from a very few. Any donation over $1 will help!

Donating through this page is fast and secure. Forgo the latte today and pick your favorite number and click "GIVE NOW" on my page:

www.firstgiving.com/lesliekbrownprc

Many thanks for your support -- and please forward this to anyone who you think might want to donate too by clicking "share this page" or start one of your own!

Thank you for your time. Know that whether not you can give at this time, know that we still think of you and hope all are well.

Warmest regards, Leslie

PS - My emailing list had a little glitch. Thanks in advance for your patience if you get emails from more than one person or got more than one from myself!

A few of our favorite things...

PDN (Photo District News) just released their eagerly-anticipated Photo Annual. Besides announcing their Annual winners and giving the amazing advice they usually do, they had a great feature titled "46 Reasons to Love Photography Now." The PRC, specifically our annual juried show, is one of their favorite things!

PDN wrote in part: "The economy got you down? PDN's editors and writers have compiled a list of the innovations, inspiring people, innovations, and idiosyncrasies that make photography as rewarding and exciting as ever." PDN- we heart you too!

A special thanks goes out to Jeanine Fijol, PDN Photo Editor, who was the juror for the PRC's 1th Annual PRC Juried Exhibition in 2006, who first contacted me. The PRC joins a whole of people, places, and things, reminiscent of our unique 30th anniversary exhibition, PRC/POV (the venerable Dashwood Books made both of our lists!). Below is a montage from the magazine and a few of the other favorite things.

* Lee Friedlander * National Geographic * ICP Infinity Awards
* on demand printing * Wired magazine * Taschen Books
* Columbia College, Chicago * 20x200 * The Eddie Adams workshop

Remain in Light

I am always a fan of artist-led, grass roots projects. Recently, I got an email from some fine folks launching a new publication for emerging photographers called Remain in Light, including Boston's own Shane Lavalette. You have until midnight to submit a handful of jpgs, with no trip to the post office needed. (Given the PRC's recent submission postmark deadline, I can only imagine the scene at Boston's main branch on Feb. 15th!) Read more about Remain in Light and the submission specs here.

Bending Spoons, Palm Reading, and more...

With great anticipation, I kept checking to see who won this year's 2007 Project Competition at Center (I find myself calling them "The Organization Formerly Known as Santa Fe Center of Photography" to differentiate). I was thrilled to surf in this past week and see that Carol Golemboski won out of an astounding 819 entries. I first met Carol at a SPE conference in 2003 in Austin, TX. I was doing research at the Harry Ransom Center for a PRC show that united spiritualist tendencies in historical photographs with contemporary work. I had an amazing time sifting through the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Harry Houdini archives surrounding the "Margery the Medium" debate going on in Boston in the 1920s. Floating heads, light orbs, and ectoplasm - oh my! So, when I looked at Carol's stunningly beautiful manipulated gelatin silver prints on the topic of Psychometry (or object reading) in the back of Jonathan Singer's booth, I knew right away I was going to show her work. You can check out the online version of the 2004 show, Concerning the Spiritual in Photography, here. Congrats Carol!

As a side note, one of the artists that showed in another PRC group exhibition, Julie Blackmon, went on to win the Center's 2006 Project Competition and was recently chosen as one of PDN's 30 Emerging Photographers for 2007. I am astounded at what has happened to her career since I first came across her work and showed her in the 2005/2006 exhibition, Group Portrait. She now has 3 galleries, a rep, and her prices have doubled. I can't help myself in saying: You go girl!

Selections by Carol Golemboski, as chosen by the 2007 jurors: Charles Guice, Director, Charles Guice Gallery, Berkeley, CA; Deborah Klochko, Director, Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego, CA; Kira Pollack, Deputy Photography Editor, New York Times Magazine. You can find Carol's work locally at the Robert Klein Gallery.
