You have 2 days left to be exposed

Although in theory this is a personal blog, life and work merge together when one works at a small non-profit. I want to remind folks that you have until TOMORROW, Saturday, February 7th to get your submission in the mail (or dropped off at the PRC 12-5pm) for the 14th Annual PRC Juried Exhibition, EXPOSURE.

Seriously photo folks, don't let this one pass you by! It takes but a second to burn 10 images to a cd and gather your materials! If you join online and don't have a card, don't worry, just make a note of it, we check everyone. Run, don't walk to the post office. (Not that I am encouraging procrastination, but you can find the branch that is open til the wee hours online for that coveted postmark).

The juror this year is Russel Hart, Executive Editor at American Photo magazine and Editor of American Photo On Campus. This year, he will be on the jury of AP's "Emerging Artist" and "Student Portfolio" showcases.

Not only that, but all of us jurors are a part of a secret society (just kidding), but understand that we do talk to each other and recommend artists to each other. Who knows what this might lead to? Not only that, but gathering up a handful of juried show wins at places like the PRC and its other kindred spirits speaks volumes on your resume. A good investment, to be sure.

Read about the submission details and get the required entry form as a PDF here. See pics of last year's show here. Now, git!

PRC on Flak Photo!

Beginning this Monday, May 19th, the PRC has teamed up with the kind folks at Flak Photo to feature 10 images from the PRC's Annual Juried Exhibition, a “web photo happening” if you will. The series kicks off today, Monday, and runs weekdays, May 19 - 23 & May 26 - 30 (and you can even sign up for their daily email). Thank you Andy!! If you are in town, stop by on Thursday night for the opening.

Flak Photo / Features showcases images from “group show” photography projects - the section highlights work from new series, book projects and gallery exhibitions. In recent months, Flak Photo has published work from jen bekman gallery’s A New American Portrait, the Minnesota Center for Photography’s PhotoBravo, the Magenta Foundation’s Flash Forward / Emerging Photographers 2007, 3030 Press’ New Photography in China, Humble Arts Foundation’s 31 Under 31: Young Women in Art Photography and Hamburger Eyes Photo Magazine’s Inside Burgerworld.

Add to the above impressive list the 12th and 13th PRC Annual Juried Exhibitions, and we’re in some really good company! Check it out at www.flakphoto.com.

A few of our favorite things...

PDN (Photo District News) just released their eagerly-anticipated Photo Annual. Besides announcing their Annual winners and giving the amazing advice they usually do, they had a great feature titled "46 Reasons to Love Photography Now." The PRC, specifically our annual juried show, is one of their favorite things!

PDN wrote in part: "The economy got you down? PDN's editors and writers have compiled a list of the innovations, inspiring people, innovations, and idiosyncrasies that make photography as rewarding and exciting as ever." PDN- we heart you too!

A special thanks goes out to Jeanine Fijol, PDN Photo Editor, who was the juror for the PRC's 1th Annual PRC Juried Exhibition in 2006, who first contacted me. The PRC joins a whole of people, places, and things, reminiscent of our unique 30th anniversary exhibition, PRC/POV (the venerable Dashwood Books made both of our lists!). Below is a montage from the magazine and a few of the other favorite things.

* Lee Friedlander * National Geographic * ICP Infinity Awards
* on demand printing * Wired magazine * Taschen Books
* Columbia College, Chicago * 20x200 * The Eddie Adams workshop

You have 3 days left to be exposed

Although in theory this is a personal blog, life and work merge together when one works at a small non-profit. I want to remind folks that you have until February 15th to get your submission in the mail for the 13th Annual PRC Juried Exhibition, EXPOSURE. Seriously photo folks, don't let this one pass you by! It takes but a second to burn 10 images to a cd and gather your materials! Run, don't walk to the post office. (Not that I am encouraging procrastination, but you can find the branch that is open til the wee hours online for that coveted postmark).

The juror this year is Lesley A. Martin of Aperture, who was recently named one of 2007's "Innovators of the Year." Aperture! This is a golden opportunity for an amazing publisher/book editor to see your work. Aperture has a venerated history and also a track record of discovering new talent (and did I mention, they also publish a magazine and have a gallery??).

Sick of being...

Apparently, this winter just wants to keep coming back. With each new temperature swing and snowfall, I get sick. Going to Miami, being on a plane, coming back to a big snowstorm, and burning the candle at both ends likely didn't help either. This couldn't come at a better time - not. Thus, announcing the results of the PRC's juried show has been delayed just a tad (sorry folks) and I go into installation of a pretty cool (but intense) show of interactive, kinetic cinematic work, Picture Show, with what appears to be a sinus infection. It's going to be fine, I keep telling myself, breath in, breath out. In the meantime, read this great preview of Picture Show--the PRC's Boston Cyberarts offering--by Randi Hopkins in the Boston Phoenix.
So, lying here on the couch, I decided to try on some new clothes aka a new blog template. I am getting spring fever and will likely be dabbling in a website and revamping the blog soon. Keep checking back, I might change my stripes. Forecast in Boston for tonight, snow...jeesh.

Monday (late) Show and Tell & The Viewfinder Shift

We made it back from SPE and Miami! Many poor souls are still stuck in airports across the country, but we managed somehow to get out with minimal delays. Quick update: took the PRC student show down in one day (with amazing interns) and after a night of rolling with the punches, Jen Bekman emerged triumphantly with a smashing presentation to a standing-room-only audience! Thanks Jen!
I will have little time to blog in the next few days, but wanted to share this great image with you courtesy of Adam Gooder's mother from a recent trip (can you see the monkeys in the background?). I've always wanted to write an essay or musing on the impact of not looking through a viewfinder anymore (and some digital consumer cameras not even having one) on contemporary photography. This will hopefully get the ideas flowing for you and me. (PS - I haven't forgotten my 5 things meme either Jeremias!) Enjoy the image...

Acronyms gone wild! JB @ PRC, LKB @ SPE

Photographers and photo organizations love acronyms, why is that? Is it the proliferation of terms photo-lovers use...such as f-stop, ISO, ASA, SLR, etc.? Moreover, I think every photo non-profit uses an acronym of some sort (CPW, HCP, CCP, SMP, MOCP, CMP, CEPA, GEH, HRHRC, ICP, VSW, etc.) How many can you list?

On another note - It's spring break and field trip time! We're very excited at the Photographic Resource Center (PRC) to host Jen Bekman (jb) next week for an edifying night of tips on the gallery world and marketing. On her popular blog personism, she invited readers to post questions for her to answer during the seminar. Here's your chance, jump into the dialogue and come out Monday night!

Bruce and I (LKB) are about to fly to the land of spring break, Miami, Florida, for the annual Society for Photographic Education (SPE) conference. I'm very excited. It just gets better and better every year. I'll post an overview once I get back. Sun, here I come.
